Purpose:  The purpose of this training is to improve the quality of lives of children with developmental disabilities and their families who are served by Michigan’s public mental health system.

Abstract:  This session will focus on how several CMHSPs have developed a service array which promotes family choice while supporting permanence for these children. Essentially, quality of life for all children begins with experiencing consistent, nurturing relationships as a family member. Within the context of these relationships, children grow and develop to their full potential. By expanding service options beyond the provision of respite and case management, and offering an array of specialty mental health services and supports, CMHSPs can promote permanence in the family and inclusion in the community for children with developmental disabilities.

Learning ObjectivesAt the end of this activity, participants will have increased knowledge in: 1) Expanding the array of specialty mental health services and supports that meet the needs of children with DD and their families; 2) Understanding of one developmental, child led intervention model to improve social-communication skills for young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders; and 3) Understand essential elements of quality transition planning.
