“Assessment and Treatment Planning with the ASAM PPC-2R: Practical Application”

*two ten minute breaks will be given during the course of this training one in the morning and one in the afternoon

 
  This workshop will offer an overview of the basic elements needed to complete a mental status assessment with a focus on the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) placement criteria for organizing assessment data.  It will include a discussion about integrating aspects of the mental health assessment and the substance use assessment.  Participants in this course will practice using this information to do the assessment of a client's presentation, their severity of current symptoms and to conceptualize his/her functioning level.  The presentation will include discussion regarding how to incorporate the assessment finding into the ASAM model.
   
  About the Presenter:
Dennis Potter, LLMSW - Clinical, FAAETS is a licensed social worker who has extensive experience in the field of mental health, substance abuse, and crisis intervention.  He is recognized as a Fellow, by the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress.  Dennis has received training and supervision in Cognitive Therapy from the Beck Institute in Philadelphia, PA., Dennis has completed a train the trainer course in Motivational Interviewing, and has provided this training to a variety of mental health and substance abuse agencies.  Dennis is a co-author of the book, Practical Concepts and Training Exercises for Crisis Intervention Teams.  He currently works as an outpatient therapist and provides consultation and training on a variety of topics
   
  Participants will be able to:
Ø To demonstrate a working knowledge of the purpose and scope of integrating a mental status examination and a
    substance use evaluation
Ø To demonstrate a better understanding of how social roles can affect the mental status examination and influence
    a consumer's severity of symptoms
Ø To understand the basic underlying concepts and principles of the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria for organizing
    assessment data
Ø To apply the assessment findings into the six assessment dimensions of the ASAM model
Ø To incorporate their observations into assessment including: appearance, attitude toward the examiner, mood, affect,
    speech characteristics, though process, though content, insight, judgment, impulsivity and reliability
Ø To use client-appropriate engagement techniques to obtain information
Ø To implement results of the assessment into clinical practice
Ø To accurately communicate and documents the information gathered during the assessment
   
  Who Should Attend:
This workshop contains material appropriate for therapist, counselors and other practitioners at all levels of practice.
   
  Credits:
The Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards is approved by the Michigan Certification Board for Addition Professionals to sponsor substance abuse training.  MACMHB maintains the responsibility for the program content.  Substance Abuse Professionals participating in this course will receive *6 contact hours.

The Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards, provider #1140, is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.  The Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards maintains responsibility for the program.  Social Workers participating in this course will receive *6 continuing education clock hours.

*You must attend the entire day to receive credit.  Participants who arrive late or depart early will NOT receive credit; NO PARTIAL CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN.  THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS.
   
  Cost: $66
Registration fee includes bagels, coffee and lunch and handout materials.  Payment Method:  Register now to reserve your spot at this training.  Payment does NOT need to accompany registration form; however, payment or purchase order must be received by the day of the training.  The training begins at 9:00am and ends at 4:00pm.
   
  Overnight Accommodations:
Participants are responsible to make overnight arrangements.  A block of rooms has been reserved at the Country Inn & Suites 517-827-7000.  Mention that you are with the MI Association of CMH Boards to receive a $65/night + tax rate.  Directions:  I-496 west take the Creyts Road north exit.  Turn on to South Creyts Rd.  Turn left onto Century Blvd.  Turn left onto Centurion Drive.
