The Michigan Department of Community Health, through the Michigan Association of CMH Boards, has provided funding for this initiative through a Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant.
Overview:
CBT is arguably the most time-tested, widely applied and well-researched form of effective therapy in the behavioral healthcare field. This training will teach participants about the critical elements of the well-known Beck CBT model in the service of equipping practitioners to be able to use intervention techniques in their work with individuals having a variety of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Particular emphasis will be on methods for dealing with hallucinations, delusions, agitation and mood swings, affect control problems, impulse control problems including addictions and problems in the therapeutic relationship related to the above.
Participants will be able to:
1) Identify the 4 key elements of cognitive therapy according to the Beck model including the roles of the cognitive conceptualization, the therapeutic relationship, the relevance of goal setting and the structure of the session;
2) Discuss the use of cognitive therapy and cognitive-behavioral techniques used in the following areas of co-occurring disorders: addiction, depression, anxiety, personality disorders (particularly Cluster B), bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia.
