The following is an outline of the 5-day comprehensive DBT training that is being offered to new and existing DBT Teams and clinicians across Michigan's CMHSP network for 2012.

 

Thos clinicians who have not had a 5-day foundational training in the past are encouraged to attend all 5-days.  Thos clinicians who have already had a 5-day foundational training are asked to identify any specific focus area(s) needing instruction and/or strengthening, and attend only those specific day(s) that best address each individuals need.

Continuing Education:

The Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards (MACMHB), provider #1140, is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.  MACMHB maintains responsibility for the program.  ASWB Approval Period:  11/10/10-11/10/13.  Social Workers participating in these training (June 11-15, 2012) may receive a maximum of 30 continuing clock hours. 

 

The Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boars is approved by the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals to sponsor substance abuse training.  MACMHB maintains the responsibility for the program and content.  Substance abuse professionals participating in these trainings (June 11-15, 2012) may receive a maximum of 30 (related) contact hours.

 

Day 1 – June 11, 2012:  Theoretical Underpinnings of DBT and Borderline Personality Disorder

·                 History of DBT

·                 Current Research on DBT

·                 Borderline Personality Disorder Defined and Re-Defined

·                 Biosocial Theory of Borderline Personality Disorder

·                 Defining Dialectics and Dialectical Dilemmas of Borderline Personality Disorder

·                 DBT Assumptions about Consumers and Therapy

·                 DBT Therapist Characteristics and Skills

·                 Modes and Functions of Outpatient DBT Treatment

·                 Consultation Meetings and Therapist Consultation Agreements

·                 Stages of DBT Treatment 

Who Should Attend?  Those who are new or have limited exposure to DBT are strongly encouraged to attend this day of training.

Day 1 –June 11 Learning Objectives:  Explain the Biosocial Theory of Borderline Personality Disorder; Define dialectics; Identify one dialectical dilemma of Borderline Personality Disorder; Identify the five modes and functions of DBT; Explain the DBT Assumptions about consumers in DBT treatment and Identify the first two stages of DBT.

Day 2 –June 12, 2012:  DBT Skills Training

·                 Hierarchy of Target Behaviors in Skills Training

·                 Demographics, Format and Rules of a Skills Training Group

·                 Roles and Responsibilities of Skills Trainers

·                 Mindfulness Exercises

·                 Homework Review

·                 Core Mindfulness Skills

·                 Distress Tolerance Skills

·                 Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills

·                 Emotion Regulation Skills

·                 Skill Acquisition, Skill Strengthening and Skill Generalization Procedures

 Who Should Attend?  Those who are interested in becoming a DBT Skills Trainer (or looking to “polish up” on those DBT skills), would like to become a peer mentor in skills training, are strongly encouraged to attend this day of training.

Day 2 – June 12 – Learning Objectives:  Identify the four skills training modules in DBT Skills Training; Identify the target behaviors in DBT Skills Training; Explain the roles of facilitators in DBT Skills Training Group and Teach at least one skill per each of the 4 skills modules.

Day 3 & 4 – June 13-14, 2012: Individual Therapy

·       Behavioral Targets…What to Treat and When

·       Pre-Treatment (Contractual) Strategies

·       Structural Strategies

·       Problem Solving Strategies…Weaving Insight and Didactic Strategies into the Behavioral Chain

·       Solution Analysis Strategies

·       Commitment Strategies

·       Change Procedures Part 1:  Contingency Procedures

·       Contingency Management Procedures

·       Observing Limits Procedures

·       Change Procedures Part 2: Exposure and Cognitive Modification

·       Dialectical Strategies

Who Should Attend?  Those clinicians who are responsible for delivering DBT in their individual sessions are strongly encouraged to attend.  These two days will blend a mix of lecture, video and experiential learning.  Clinicians who have had a previous foundational training in DBT are encouraged to attend as well.

 Day 3 & 4 – June 13-14 – Learning Objectives:  Identify the communication strategies used in DBT; Implement a behavioral chain analysis on Stage 1 target behaviors; Explain the role of pre-treatment strategies in DBT; Implement at least three commitment strategies; Identify which change strategy to implement based on a solution analysis; Define “operant” and “respondent” conditioned behavior; List at least three ways to reinforce adaptive behavior and extinguish maladaptive behavior; Explain the reasoning in conducting exposure therapy in DBT; Explain the difference between traditional Cognitive Therapy and the way DBT modifies cognitions and Implement at least three dialectical strategies used in DBT.

Day 5 –June 15, 2012 Special Treatment Strategies: Case Management, Crisis and Suicide Strategies, Telephone Strategies

·       Consultation-to-the-Patient Strategies

·       Consultation-to-the-Environment Strategies

·       Crisis Strategies

·       Suicidal Behavior Strategies

·       Telephone Strategies 

Who Should Attend? Individual therapists, skills trainers and on-call/crisis workers are encouraged to attend.  , this day will focus primarily on case management strategies, suicide and crisis strategies and telephone consultation strategies.

Day 5 –June 15– Learning Objectives:  Explain the reasoning behind using the consultation-to-the-patient strategies; Identify two instances to use the consultation-to-the-environment strategies; Identify the roles of the skills trainers and individual therapists in regards to crisis and suicide strategies; Explain the concept behind the “24-hour rule” in DBT; Identify the target behaviors in telephone consultation
