The Michigan Department of Community Health, through the Michigan Association of CMH Boards, has provided funding for this initiative through a Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant.
Overview:
What we know about the brain, mental illness and addictions should inform the use of medications in the treatment of individuals with both psychiatric illnesses and substance use disorders. Clinicians working with consumers with co-occurring disorders need to be knowledgeable in understanding how medications impact substance use and how substance use impacts the effectiveness of medications.
Participants will be able to:
1.) State 3 ways substance use impacts the effectiveness of psychiatric medications;
2.) Name 4 medications that can be used to assist in decreasing substance use, and/or to help in managing withdrawal symptoms; and
3.) Identify appropriate and effective pharmacological prescribing practices, and complementary psychosocial treatments used to treat co-occurring disorders.
