This advanced Motivational Interviewing skills training defines, demonstrates and practices MI skill and spirit with interactive exercises. Participants will practice MI with advanced directional interventions. This training will elicit the strengths and needs of participants and provide interactive practice activities to build MI skill and confidence.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify a personal working definition of Motivational Interviewing
  • List 4 advanced reflective listening skills
  • Describe 5 roadblocks to active listening
  • Examine the four processes of Motivational Interviewing
  • Apply advanced MI skills of co-constructing a narrative
  • Use value sort cards to explore personal values and develop discrepancies between values and behavior

Who Should Attend?  This event is sponsored by the adult mental health block grant and is intended for persons who serve adults only through the mental health and substance abuse provider network in the state of Michigan.  Attendees are required to take the 2-Day Motivational Interviewing Basic Skills Training prior to attending Motivational Interviewing Advanced Skills Training. Clinical directors, supervisors, case managers, supports coordinators, therapists, crisis workers, and any other practitioners at the intermediate or advanced level of practice.

Featuring:  Randy Estes, LMSW, CAADC, CCS, Clinical Manager, Skywood Recovery Center, Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)

Randy Estes is the Clinical Manager at Skywood Recovery Center where he supervises a team of residential therapists and provides Motivational Interviewing trainings for all Skywood employees. Randy is a licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Certified Advanced Addictions Counselor (CAADC) and a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS). He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), joining in 2010. Before coming to Skywood, Randy worked as a residential case manager/therapist, community base case manager/therapist, outpatient substance abuse therapist, Assertive Community Treatment supervisor, Integrated Dual Diagnosis Team supervisor, and Outpatient Substance Abuse supervisor.

 Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval. Social workers participating in this course will receive 6 Clinical Continuing Education Clock Hours.  Course Delivery Method: Face-to-Face seminar.

Substance abuse professionals participating in this training will receive 6 (Specific) contact hours.

Community Mental Health Assocation of Michigan is approved by the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) to sponsor educational training for professional certification. MACMHB maintains the responsibility for the program and content.  Substance Abuse Professionals participating in  this training will receive the number of hourse publishing in the brochure.

*National Accreditation rules indicate that if you are over 5-minutes late or depart early, you forfeit your CE for the entire training.  Please note that this is a National rule that CMHAM must enforce or we could lose our provider status to provide CE in the future.  This rule will be strictly followed.


Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, through the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan, has provided funding for this initiative through Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant.


There will be an opportunity for each participant to complete an evaluation of the conference and the instructor.  If you have any issues with the way in which this conference was conducted or other problems, you may note that on your evaluation of the conference or you may contact CMHAM at 517-374-6848 or through our website at for resolution.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must be received in writing at least 10 business days prior to the conference for a full refund less a $25 administrative fee.  If cancellation is received less than 10 business days prior to the training, no refund will be given and the full charge will be incurred. Substitutions are permitted at any time. 

Payment Policy: Payment will be required prior to attendance.   Payment methods available in advance and onsite:  credit card, check or exact cash.   If payment has not been received prior to the event, fees will be collected at registration the day of the event unless alternate arrangements are pre-approved by CMHAM.  NOTE: Purchase orders are not considered payment. All no shows will be invoiced the full registration amount. All checks can be made out to CMHAM and sent to CMHAM, 426 S. Walnut, Lansing, MI 48933.
