This advanced Motivational Interviewing skills training defines, demonstrates and practices MI skill and spirit with interactive exercises. Participants will practice MI with advanced directional interventions. This training will elicit the strengths and needs of participants and provide interactive practice activities to build MI skill and confidence.
Participants will be able to:
- Identify a personal working definition of Motivational Interviewing
- List 4 advanced reflective listening skills
- Describe 5 roadblocks to active listening
- Examine the four processes of Motivational Interviewing
- Apply advanced MI skills of co-constructing a narrative
- Use value sort cards to explore personal values and develop discrepancies between values and behavior
Who Should Attend? This event is sponsored by the adult mental health block grant and is intended for persons who serve adults through the mental health and substance abuse provider network in the state of Michigan. Attendees are required to take the 2-Day Motivational Interviewing Basic Skills Training prior to attending Motivational Interviewing Advanced Skills Training. Clinical directors, supervisors, case managers, supports coordinators, therapists, crisis workers, and any other practitioners at the intermediate or advanced level of practice.

Randy Estes is the Clinical Manager at Skywood Recovery Center where he supervises a team of residential therapists and provides Motivational Interviewing trainings for all Skywood employees. Randy is a licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Certified Advanced Addictions Counselor (CAADC) and a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS). He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), joining in 2010. Before coming to Skywood, Randy worked as a residential case manager/therapist, community base case manager/therapist, outpatient substance abuse therapist, Assertive Community Treatment supervisor, Integrated Dual Diagnosis Team supervisor, and Outpatient Substance Abuse supervisor.
